The monastery of Santa Lucia in Adrano, metropolitan area of Catania, is an important (and imposing…) architectural complex that dates back to the late 14th century and is a symbol of the Etnean town from both a social and tourist point of view.

The building overlooks the very central Via Roma, an artery that has undergone a special redevelopment aimed at making it a meeting place rather than a place of passage in continuity with the overlooking Victory Garden.

Included in this urban restyling action financed with Pnrr funds and strongly desired by the municipal administration led by Mayor Fabio Mancuso was the architectural mapping of the main facade of the religious building.

It was a major professional challenge: an area of about 4,000 square meters with architectural elements of different styles had to be rethought in an artistic before a luminous key to make it dialogue with the rest of the urban fabric in a permanent perspective.

For this reason it was necessary to involve our company directly from the preparatory stages of installation. Goboservice’s technical department gave support to the company contracted by the municipality for the positioning of the poles to which to anchor the projectors – there are as many as 21 of them – identifying the most useful points for installation. This was followed by the delicate stages of installing the machines and projecting the millimeter grids needed to make the mapped gobos.

The Divum 50k and Divum 30K Plus projectors were positioned to maximize the effectiveness of the optical systems provided while the projection of a special gobo-pantone helped to define the background color to be used, distinguishing the wings of the building from the church placed in the center of the set design.

Acting as a liaison between the municipal administration and Goboservice was light designer Gaetano La Mela, who, in a constant and close dialogue with the graphics department, participated in defining the content to be reproduced in both the permanent and temporary versions that would serve as the backdrop for the week-long celebration of Patron Saint Nicholas Politi.

A type of decoration was opted for that would highlight the decorative architectural elements present without adding additional light components. These could have misled the visual perception of those who stop to contemplate the building returned to new decorum thanks to Goboservice’s intervention.

Touching words written by Mayor Fabio Mancuso on his social profile on the occasion of the inauguration: “The evening of July 27, 2025 will remain etched in the history of Adrano. We saw Via Roma transform into a river of light. We saw the Monastery of Saint Lucy shine again as never before. We have seen Adrano look in the mirror-and recognize itself as beautiful beautiful. This is not just artistic illumination. It is memory being kindled. It is identity reaffirming itself. It is pride returning to walk the streets of our city. Adrano has always been an extraordinary land. And when beauty manifests itself, it reminds us that we belong to a place that deserves to be loved, respected, cherished. This light is a visible sign of what we are: a community that knows how to shine.”
