MArRC, tales of light for the summer

On a beautiful sunny day, the disassembly of the two batteries of Divum 50k projectors that have embellished the main elevation of the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria with 9 different graphics for 5 months took place.

Let us look back over the long period of time, coinciding with the city’s tourist season, to crystallize a good practice that has proven successful and convincing and seize the opportunities inherent in this way of communication.

Everything started from an intuition: to create a useful event to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of Goboservice branded projection systems in an urban context to be taken as a model for visual and communicative impact. Right from the start, the focus was on the main elevation of Palazzo Piacentini, home of the MArRC, a peculiar building in the urban fabric of the city, designed and built in that very fruitful season, following the earthquake of 1908, in which the most refined intelligences of the national scene found on the two banks of the Strait the best conditions to express their creative flair.

The solemn building conceived by architect Marcello Piacentini in 1931 represented the first project in Italy of a structure designed specifically to house an archaeological museum. Almost a century later, the gigantic building has found in Goboservice projections its natural complement of light. The installation of the two anchor towers necessary for the correct perspective positioning of the projectors, was in addition to a previous restyling intervention that at the input of the Archaeological Superintendence of Calabria completely redesigned the overlooking Piazza De Nava, creating a spatial unicum much appreciated by the citizenry for its social welcoming capacity and the happy synthesis of past and future.

The idea of completely mapping the monumental entrance façade, a challenge never faced by any market player until now, was shared with both the municipal administration and the museum’s management, finding in both actively collaborative interlocutors. The municipality provided the Castore Spl service company for assembly and disassembly operations while the MArRC management, in addition to giving consent to the projections on the monument, was one of the points of reference for the themes to be developed.

Thus began two scenarios that kicked off the spring season. During the projections of these thematics, which covered the founding myths of the city and some of the most beautiful artifacts housed in the museum’s halls, there was also a way to make people appreciate the IP54 degree of protection of the installed machines.

In fact, just in conjunction with the “DemoDay” in mid-May, which was attended by partners from all over Italy in Reggio Calabria, a violent downpour scourged the square and our guests without affecting the projectors, anchor towers or the Dmx used to manage the scene change in the slightest.

We then moved on to two national anniversaries that found space and light with our screenings: the Republic Day (June 2) and the immediately following Carabinieri (June 5).

For both particularly welcome was the contribution of the “ABITALAB” laboratory of the Mediterranean University with which Goboservice has a special partnership in place. It was its graphics team in collaboration with the equivalent sector of Goboservice that conceived the images then submitted for approval by the municipal administration and the Provincial Command of the Carabinieri.

And what the effect has been on the community has been demonstrated by both the extremely positive and gratifying echo on social channels and the enthusiastic comments from foreign partners participating in the second DemoDay of the season, reserved precisely for operators from beyond the Alps.

Meanwhile, as the Reggina summer progressed, cultural and artistic activities organized on the Museum’s scenic terrace overlooking the Strait were coming into full swing. People on different evenings were greeted precisely by a new summer scenery projected by Divum 50k that recalled the iconic colors and lines of our territory.

This culminated in the two stage appearances in late July and August. With the first, the MArRC’s new logo was presented, while with the second – also conceived by ABITALAB – the anniversary of the discovery of the Riace Bronzes (August 16, 1972) was celebrated.

The conclusion of the screening period coincided with the 19th edition of ReggioFilmFest, the prestigious arts festival that for a week hosted actors, filmmakers and cinephiles in the square set up as a large movie theater “en plain air.” In this case, our projectors generated the festival poster on the facade as a backdrop to the red carpet and film screenings.

Finally, to be highlighted is both the great teamwork that involved in a truly extraordinary way the women and men of Goboservice and the equally appreciated collaboration with two city services: Video Travel and Schiavone Lights. Both have shown great proximity to the project and attunement with the company by providing solutions, men and means to handle specific operational actions.

Our company’s gratitude also goes to them for this virtuous shared operational experience between public administrations and private companies.
